Nick Layton/80's Metal Guitar Monsters

Speed, Command, Style, Conviction; These are guitar traits we all want, but to get there we must study the greats.

80's Metal Guitar Monsters

Back in the day guitarists would gather around and watch their favorite guitar players in awe and say things like "wow! What a monster player he is." Or "that guy has MONSTER chops" referring to the guitarists technical abilities.

It's in that sprit of awe and wonder I present this course to you. As a teenager during the 80's who was just beginning to earn his stripes on the guitar I vividly remember listening in amazement to the three players who are the focus of this course and saying to myself "what a monster"! In this course we will be digging deep into these 3 guitarists soloing styles, licks, rhythm chops and much more:

  1. Jake E Lee - We'll look into Jake's unique rhythm style including his favorite chord voicings and killer riffing style. We'll study Jake's soloing style that combines 80's flash with gritty blues phrasing and unusual techniques, and we'll dig deep into a full song style study reminiscent of his work with Ozzy.

  2. John Sykes - John's style is pure rock n roll attitude! But he's also got a soft side in the way he plays over ballads and uses that glorious vibrato to make us all get a little weepy! We'll study John's vibrato, fiery blues licks, blistering 3 note per string runs and his beautiful arpeggio and intervallic ideas. John is an amazing rhythm player as well and we'll explore his riffing and songwriting style in depth!

  3. Vito Bratta - Vito gets compared to Eddie Van Halen because they both use tapping as a main technique, but Vito has his own unique, melodic twist on lead and rhythm guitar that is sure to inspire your playing! We'll study Vito's melodic use of triads and inversions in his rhythm and lead style, as well as some challenging tapping ideas and blistering legato licks. You'l become a more melodic guitarist by studying Vito's style.
