Nick Layton/German Metal Masters

What do the Germans know about Metal Guitar that the rest of us don't?

What's the difference between the Sunset Strip hard rock guitarists of the 1980's and the German metal guitarists of the late 70's and early 80's?

I'm talking about comparing George Lynch with Michael Schenker.

Eddie Van Halen with Uli Jon Roth.

Warren DeMartini with Matthias Jabs.

Randy Rhoads and Wolf Hoffman.

Whenever I listened to the German players, especially Schenker and Uli Roth, there seemed to be this classical sense of melody. It was less flashy but more classy. There was a sense of drama and passion that was sometimes missing in their USA counterparts.

Darker scales, heavier guitar sounds, speed but melodic speed, beautiful and expressive vibrato and bending, etc. I desperately wanted to play like that but I wasn't learning it from the LA guys.

I came to find out that the song structures of the German bands were different and the chord progressions behind the guitar solos were also unique for the most part compared to the USA guys. Don't get me wrong, I loved players like Lynch and VH but I wanted some european firepower in my playing...the best of both worlds would be combining the two worlds.

Sounds like a great idea for a guitar course. Enter German Metal Masters!
