Well, it turns out that what you really need is synchronization between the picking and fretting hand to achieve good, clean speed. However, what usually is never talked about is that if you have a weak fretting hand, there is no way you'll ever be in synch, or achieve any kind of clean speed.

So what do we need to work on first to build speed in our playing, is it picking or legato?

I used to think it was the picking hand and that I needed to get my alternate picking together first. After all, with the complex string crossing and pick angles picking definitely seems like the harder of the two techniques. So that must be what's been holding me back, right? Well, I can tell you that after many hours of trying to develop my picking skills, my gains were marginal at best, and I was left discouraged.

I have come to believe that it is really a weak fretting hand that lets us down most of the time. I discovered that even with a good solid picking technique I wasn't getting any faster because my fretting hand would tire out and couldn't keep up.

But once I started focusing on my fret hand, BAM! I started to fly across the neck like never before. And you know what? The picking became easier because of it.
